Botia-lehden suomenkieliset versiot

Below are PDF files of the article's two parts. The first part deals with the nature of freshwater systems and the risks that freshwater fish (and other freshwater animals) face nowadays. The second part deals with what aquarium hobbyists can do about it.

The sixth mass extinction and the home aquarist

Part One: Biodiversity loss

English version of an article I have written for Botia journal, published (in Finnish) there in March 2023. (Cover/Background image credited as in Figure 8 [see figure sources at the end of article].)

Pachypanchax sakaramyi

Madagascar panchax

A great beginner killie. Peaceful and non-aggressive. They gather in a loose shoal near the surface or in mid-level. Extremely hardy and adaptable to different water parameters. Are not "jumpers". Not picky eaters - will gladly take any dry, frozen or live food. A non-annual killie that can live quite long, and is very easy to breed. Endangered in their native Madagascar, so captive breeding is encouraged.

Xenotoca lyonsi

Tamazula Redtail Splitfin

An endangered livebearer from Mexico, with a nice combination of orange and blue coloration.

Chapalichthys pardalis

Polkadot splitfin

Endangered livebearer from Mexico. Hardy and adaptable species.

Recommendations for the beginner killifish hobbyist

I describe my experience with some killifish species, and list them in order of increasing ease of care and breeding.

Helmikuun laji

Nematolebias papilliferus

Helmikuu on karnevaalikuukausi, siksi tässä kuussa värikäs killilaji vieläpä Rio de Janeiron osavaltiosta, ihan Rion kaupungin seudulta.

December 2022 spotlight and photospread

Ophthalmolebias constanciae

As an antidote to the coldness and darkness of Finnish December, a species with warm colors from a warm location - the state of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.

Hypsolebias sertanejo

"Sertão Pearlfish"

This small, peaceful and attractive South American annual killie is also relatively easy to keep, grow and breed.

Nothobranchius korthausae

"Mafia island notho"

A colorful annual killie from East Africa. An active fish, especially during feeding time. They often come to the front glass, displaying their colors.

Nothobranchius palmqvisti

"Palmqvist's notho"

Colorful annual from East Africa. Easy to feed and breed.

Austrolebias patriciae

"Dwarf Blackfin pearlfish"

This small blue-green gem (or pearl) of a fish from Paraguay and Argentina should be kept in its own species tank. A small group of several males and females can be kept together for breeding. Prefers live food.

Ophthalmolebias constanciae

Featherfin Pearlfish

A small and attractive South American annual killifish. Quite prolific.

Nematolebias papilliferus

"Maricá Rio Pearlfish"

Annual killie from Brazil. A relatively large-sized annual (up to 11 cm; though remains smaller in the aquarium). A very easy and durable species, perfect as a beginner killie.
